After coming second in the 2018 VdeV Endurance Series – Single Seater championship, Greg Segers steered his career in a new direction by joining team AB Sport Auto this season for the brand new championship, the Ultimate Cup Series. The young driver kicked off his season with a podium at Estoril, accompanied by Thierry Proust and Ronny Montereau, at the wheel of a Renault Sport R.S.0.1.
The Bourlon based driver (Pas-de-Calais) does not regret making the change previously mentioned: “ My excellent results in 2018 did not go unnoticed and the fact that I could compete here is down to the support of Assurance Lestienne, the Ultimate Cup Series, of team AB Sport Auto and Driving Koncept. I would like to thank them for their trust after last year’s season in Formula Renault. Driving a GT car is quite different of course, but I benefited a lot from AB Sport Auto’s advice, who performed fantastically throughout the whole meeting, and from my team mates Thierry Proust and Ronny Montereau. The R.S.0.1 is fabulous to drive. I had the honor of participating in the selection organised by Porsche at the end of 2018. Managing the 550 bhp of this great car isn’t easy at first but I got the hang of it soon enough in order to put in some excellent lap times and to do my part within the team.”
The 4 Hour race was a bit tricky, yet the young rookie still managed to perform: “ I felt quite a bit of pressure when it was my turn to drive, but I was determined to maintain our leadership, which I managed to do. As a ‘Silver’ graded driver, my stint couldn’t exceed 1h15 mins. I was getting close to it when we experienced a radio issue, at which point I couldn’t hear the order to pit. I started to lose control in a corner and decided to decrease my speed. Thankfully I got back to the pits safely. It’s a shame to have lost the lead that we had secured, the engineer in charge of strategy had done a perfect job. How did the race finish? Even if he was the least experienced, since it was his first time racing on circuit, Ronny Montereau did a great job in the final stint. We missed out on the win by a few seconds. But for this first GT race in the Ultimate Cup Series, I was extremely happy to stand on the second step of the podium. This race was not originally planned on my calendar. I hope that my performance will lead to more…”
