Alfredo Hernández comes to us from Mexico and made his Ultimate Cup Series debut in 2022 with a couple of stints at the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo with the BDR Grupo Prom team. He is back in 2023 for a full season in the Sprint GT-Touring Challenge at the wheel of the same car and with the same team.
After three events – Le Castellet, Navarra and Hockenheim – the Mexican driver leads the UGT3A2 category with four podium finishes overall, and no fewer than seven wins in his category. So, at the halfway point of the season, he is naturally the class championship leader.
Alfredo, can you tell us why you decided to take part this season?
“Well, in my opinion, it’s a very nice championship where there’s normally a lot of competition. It’s very difficult because there are a lot of very high quality cars and some very good teams. Here, to finish in the top three overall is a real challenge. It’s great because the organisers choose the best circuits in Europe. It’s fun, it’s competitive, it’s a challenge for all the drivers. It’s great.
His good results are all the more remarkable given that he had virtually no experience of motor sport before last year, especially in Europe. And yet…
“Last year, I finished second in the LC Cup of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. I only came to this competition, the Ultimate Cup Series, for three races. But in the end, it was great because I always finished in the top positions.”
What do you think of this Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo, the latest evolution of the car from the Sant’Agata Bolognese firm?
“The Super Trofeo is a supercar with a lot of power. The aerodynamics aren’t as good as those of a real GT3, but it’s a car with power, and it’s a good compromise compared with the GT3. It’s a difficult car to drive because you have to manage the aero and the power. Less aerodynamics and a lot of power. But the feeling is like driving a dragster.
What are your target?
“This season in the Ultimate Cup Series, I really want to finish second or third overall. And definitely champion in my category. The idea is the most important. I really want to make the most of this season.
